Laser tattoo removal

Tattoo removal has been performed with various tools during the history of tattooing. While tattoos were once considered permanent, it is now possible to remove them with treatments, fully or partially.

Laser tattoo removal is entirely safe and produces fantastic results. In most cases we are able to completely eradicate the tattoo, leaving the skin looking completely natural. Several factors can affect how long the treatment will take and how effective it will be. These include the colors used, the size of the tattoo and the density of the ink. Tattoos are completely unique to the individual.

How does it work?

The laser works by passing a beam through the skin and breaking the tattoo ink up into tiny particles. These particles are then gradually removed by our body’s immune system. It usually takes several treatment sessions to ensure success, with regular intervals between sessions. In some circumstances, a slight amount of ink will remain that cannot be removed, but this is usually not visible unless the skin is very closely examined.

Pre-treatment:

Pre-treatment care is vital when getting a tattoo removed. Clients need to avoid sun exposure 4-6 weeks prior to as well as throughout the treatment, as sunlight increases the risk of hypo-pigmentation (skin discoloration). Tanning lotion must also be discontinued one week before treatment.

Treatment:

The procedure can cause a stinging sensation, which can be eased by applying a local anesthetic cream. Some people also experience a lightening or darkening of the treated skin, though in most cases this returns to normal after six months. Redness in the area and a feeling of sunburn is also common after the procedure but subsides quickly. We strongly advise using a high-factor sunblock while the skin is still sensitive.

Aftercare:

Following aftercare guidelines is vital during the laser tattoo removal process. A dressing is applied to the tattoo before you leave the clinic which should be removed once home, allow the air to the area to aid healing. Keep the area dry for a 24 hour period after this, when the area gets wet pat dry with a towel.

In some cases following treatment, blistering may occur over the tattoo. This is quite normal and usually goes away within 7-10 days; you should not apply any creams or ointments to the area. Never attempt to burst the blisters as this can increases the risk of infection and can cause scarring. The blister fluid may look dark in color, however, this is due to the tattoo pigment and is nothing to worry about. Do not pick any scabbing to the area as this will damage the skin, and wait until the skin is fully healed before going swimming.
